The Last Zetral
Madness and Mayhem Day 28: Create-A-Cryptid
Though the night was illuminated by the full moon above the surface, the world beneath the waves was dark. Not because the light canβt reach, but because the last Zetral was stirring.
Once, we ruled the seas,
On the ocean floor, in peace.
Gliding through the water with ease,
Thinking bliss would never cease.
Our impossibly large form,
Protecting those who would be prey.
From the hungry, angry swarm,
Sending predators away.
But before our eyes,
The bliss we knew was gone.
Two-legged monsters seeking their prize,
A new enemy came with the dawn.
They saw us and were afraid,
They lifted their spears, readied their guns.
They cheered for their bloody raid,
Now all has come undone.
The water runs red,
With the blood of my kin.
My own life hanging by a thread,
As a spear protrudes from my skin.
I know Death awaits me,
The last of the Zetrals; I go alone.
I hope my passing sets them free,
No more fear of the unknown.

Itβs always a treat when you publish a new poem, Mina! I love the direction you took this in. It reminds me of a poem that I wrote many, many years ago about a strange ocean creature that fishermen ultimately killed and ate instead of letting it go.
Iβm not sure if it was a hoax or not, but this piece really reminded me of that. As Maryellen said, humans stink.
Ohhhh no, how sad. Humans stink!
